Encaustic on Wood with Copper and Sand

In this work, inspired by an ancient ritual purification bath, water is implied and physical immersion – left to the imagination. Burnt steps lead to the center. Copper footbridges suggest entry from opposite sides, and a wake of blue and black sand completes the fourth direction. The bath is composed of two wooden hemispheres painted with encaustic, charcoal and sand. Smaller bowed shapes interlock, connecting the interior circumference and jut out over the wake. Their charred black lines are drawn by fire. A stream of rolled copper, dusted with blue and black sand, runs through the center of the bath and extends beyond its borders.
